Emirates Road's $204 Million Revamp Set to Cut Travel Time B 45%
Major two-year infrastructure project to ease congestion across Northern Emirates

The UAE is gearing up for a major transformation of Emirates Road, with a massive AED 750 million ($204 million) infrastructure upgrade set to begin in September 2025. The two-year project, led by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, is designed to reduce travel time by up to 45% and ease traffic congestion across key parts of the Northern Emirates.
At the heart of the revamp is the widening of a 25-kilometre stretch of Emirates Road, expanding it from three to five lanes in each direction between Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah and the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. Once complete, the road will be able to handle up to 9,000 vehicles per hour—an increase of about 65% in its current capacity.
One of the most critical parts of the project is the comprehensive upgrade of Interchange No. 7, a major traffic bottleneck. The upgrade will include six new directional bridges totaling 12.6 kilometres in length, with a combined capacity of 13,200 vehicles per hour. The goal is to eliminate congestion at this key junction and improve connectivity for long-distance travelers and daily commuters alike.
In addition to the main road expansion, 3.4 kilometres of collector roads will be built on both sides of Emirates Road. These auxiliary roads are designed to streamline traffic entering and exiting the main highway, improving safety and traffic flow.
According to Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, the project reflects the UAE’s long-term vision of building a fully integrated and future-ready road network that supports both population growth and economic development.
“By enhancing road efficiency and upgrading key interchanges, we aim to reduce daily commute times, improve quality of life, and support the UAE’s broader sustainability and development goals,” said Al Mazrouei.
Hassan Al Mansouri, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, emphasized that the project will be executed to international engineering and sustainability standards. “It will significantly enhance traffic flow, especially for transit movement between cities across the UAE, and deliver long-term value to residents, businesses, and the environment,” he said.
The Emirates Road upgrade is part of a broader national push to modernize infrastructure and tackle traffic bottlenecks head-on. With increasing urbanisation and vehicle use in the UAE, the project comes at a critical time and is expected to deliver lasting improvements to both mobility and safety across the region.
