Offenders Penalized Dh165,000 for Damaging Biodiversity in Al Wathba Protected Area
In Abu Dhabi, several individuals were fined Dh165,000 for illegally entering a nature reserve in the Al Wathba area and causing damage to critical animal habitats. The Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) detected the violation, stating that the offenders entered the protected area without the necessary permits.
Al Wathba is a vital ecological zone known for its natural heritage and biodiversity. It includes the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, which serves as a seasonal home to thousands of flamingos and hosts numerous species that inhabit the area year-round. The reserve is also known for its ancient fossil dunes, dating back approximately 120,000 years.
The EAD highlighted the importance of preserving the emirate’s natural resources, stating, “Preserving biodiversity and natural heritage is a shared responsibility. Let us all adhere to environmental laws to protect these resources for future generations.”
While certain parts of Al Wathba are open to the public, access is controlled to maintain the integrity of the reserve. The EAD encourages everyone to respect environmental regulations and contribute to a sustainable future.
