Man Ordered to Repay Dh19,600 After Fake Discounted Flight Ticket Scam
Court also awards Dh5,000 compensation after victim was deceived into transferring money for non-existent cheap airline tickets.
The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Claims Court has ordered a man to repay Dh19,600 and pay an additional Dh5,000 in compensation to a victim he duped by falsely claiming he could arrange discounted airline tickets.
The case was filed by a man who sought a court order compelling the defendant to return Dh19,600, along with Dh15,000 in compensation for material and moral damages, in addition to legal fees and expenses.
According to court records, the plaintiff said the defendant had misled him into believing he could secure cheap air tickets. Relying on this claim, the plaintiff transferred Dh19,600, which was subsequently misappropriated.
The plaintiff also noted that a related criminal judgment had already been issued in the matter, recognising the wrongdoing and ordering compensation for the losses suffered, including financial harm and emotional distress.
In its reasoning, the court stated that the prior criminal judgment had become final and binding, and therefore the defendant was obliged to repay the amount claimed. The defendant neither appeared in court nor provided any proof of repayment.
The court further observed that the defendant had unlawfully taken the plaintiff’s money without justification, depriving him of its use and any potential financial benefit during the period of loss. It added that the resulting hardship and distress warranted compensation, which it set at Dh5,000.
