Fake Bank Employee Cheats Abu Dhabi Woman of Dh22,092 in Card Scam

An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a man who impersonated a bank employee and defrauded a woman of Dh22,092 to repay the stolen amount and pay Dh2,000 in compensation for damages.

The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court issued the ruling after finding that the man had obtained the woman’s money through fraudulent means using information technology. He allegedly deceived her by claiming to be a bank employee and warning that her bank card had been compromised, before stealing the amount from her card with the help of an unidentified accomplice.

The woman had filed a civil claim against the man, seeking the recovery of Dh22,092 along with Dh8,000 in financial and moral compensation, in addition to legal fees and expenses.

In her complaint, she stated that the defendant had falsely represented himself as a bank employee and used the alleged fraud alert regarding her bank card as a means to gain access to her funds. She said she had reported the incident to the authorities, which led to criminal proceedings against him.

The court noted that a previous criminal judgment had already established his guilt and that the conviction had become final after no appeal was filed.

Based on the findings of the criminal case, the civil court ruled that the defendant must return the full amount of Dh22,092 to the woman and pay an additional Dh2,000 in compensation for the losses and harm caused by his actions.
