An Abu Dhabi Labour Court has ordered an employee to pay more than Dh290,000 to his former company after he was found guilty of embezzling company funds.

According to court documents, the man had been employed as a public relations manager since August 24, 2024, earning a monthly salary of Dh17,000, including a basic salary of Dh10,500. To facilitate official duties, the company had granted him power of attorney.

The firm periodically transferred money to his account to carry out business-related tasks. However, it later discovered that he had misappropriated a total of Dh294,304.24 from company funds. As a result, the company terminated his employment for breach of trust and financial misconduct under Article 44 of the UAE Labour Law.

In documents submitted to the court, the company alleged that the former employee had committed several financial violations. These included purchasing mobile phones worth Dh28,077.24 using company funds without delivering the devices to the employer.

He had also received a salary advance of Dh14,236 while in Jordan, which he failed to repay despite promising to do so. In addition, Dh9,000 transferred to him for company purposes was allegedly mishandled without any explanation of how the money was spent.

The company further stated that he had taken loans totalling Dh243,515 from the firm that remained unpaid. Traffic fines amounting to Dh2,690 incurred during the course of his work were also left unsettled.

The documents also noted that Dh5,317 transferred to him to complete company tasks was not returned, along with another Dh449 that had been sent to his account.

Following a financial review by a court-appointed expert to verify the transactions and identify any misappropriation, the Abu Dhabi Labour Court of First Instance ordered the employee to repay Dh290,383.66 to the company, in addition to court costs and Dh500 in legal fees.
