An Abu Dhabi court has ordered two companies to jointly pay Dh40,000 in compensation to a worker who suffered serious injuries after a piece of iron fell from a crane onto his leg while he was on duty at a construction site.

The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court found both firms liable for the accident, which resulted in the employee sustaining a 20 per cent permanent disability in his left foot.

According to case details, the worker had initially filed a lawsuit seeking Dh250,000 in compensation for material, physical and moral damages, along with 12 per cent late payment interest from the date of judgment until full settlement, in addition to Dh3,874 towards forensic report fees, expenses and legal costs.

The incident occurred when a heavy iron object being lifted by a crane fell onto the worker. The employee argued that the accident was caused by an error on the part of the crane operator, leading to severe injuries.

A prior ruling from the Criminal Court had already convicted the two companies in absentia for negligence that resulted in the worker’s injury, citing a failure to adhere to professional safety standards.

The court noted that the main contractor had failed to ensure the presence of a safety and security officer at the site, while the subcontractor did not adequately supervise its workforce. These lapses, the court said, directly contributed to the accident.

Following its review, the civil court held both companies responsible and ordered them to pay Dh20,000 each, bringing the total compensation to Dh40,000.
