An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a company to pay Dh30,000 in compensation to a man who suffered lasting injuries after an elevator accident, citing negligence in maintenance and safety standards.

The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court found that the company failed to fulfil its professional duty by not carrying out regular maintenance checks and ensuring the proper functioning of the lift.

The court noted that this negligence led to a serious incident in which the elevator door closed on the man, causing him permanent disability assessed at 10 per cent impairment of his digestive system function.

In his civil claim, the man had initially sought Dh350,000 in compensation for material, physical and moral damages, in addition to legal interest of five per cent from the date the judgment becomes final until full payment is made. He also requested that the company bear court fees, expenses, and lawyer’s charges.

The plaintiff argued that his injuries were the direct result of the company’s breach of its professional obligations.

A related criminal case had already been filed earlier, resulting in a judgment against the company for causing harm to the plaintiff. This finding supported his subsequent civil claim for compensation, which the court has now partly upheld.
