Staff WriterOct 31, 2025, 1:15 PMThe Abu Dhabi Labour Court of First Instance has ordered a company to pay a former employee Dh222,605 in unpaid wages, end-of-service gratuity and other benefits.
The ruling came after the employee, who worked as a civil engineer, filed a complaint with the relevant administrative authority claiming that his employer had failed to honour his labour rights. When mediation efforts failed, the matter was referred to court.
In his lawsuit, the employee sought back wages amounting to Dh358,741.94, compensation for arbitrary dismissal of Dh75,000, annual leave allowance of Dh49,808.22, notice pay of Dh25,000, an end-of-service benefit of Dh31,500, housing and transportation allowance of Dh26,000, a certificate of experience and settlement of Dh51,153 for invoices he had paid from his cash advance account.
An accounting expert was appointed to review the case. Based on the expert’s findings and supporting documents -- including an email from the company confirming his employment and salary structure -- the court found the claims partially valid.
The employee was awarded Dh100,000 in wages, Dh20,000 for two years’ accrued leave, Dh31,452 as gratuity, Dh20,000 in housing and transport allowance, and Dh51,153 to settle the cash advance. However, the court rejected his claims for arbitrary dismissal and notice pay.
The total award amounted to Dh222,605. The company was also directed to issue a certificate of experience detailing the employee’s job title, duration of service, type of work performed, last salary and reason for termination -- without including any remarks that could harm his reputation or future job prospects.
