Abu Dhabi Court Orders Woman to Pay Dh15,000 for Online Insults, Posting Photos
Court finds WhatsApp abuse and TikTok posts caused moral damage, following prior criminal conviction in the case.
The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court has ordered a woman to pay Dh15,000 in compensation to another woman after she insulted her via WhatsApp messages and published her photographs on TikTok without consent.
The complainant had filed a civil case seeking Dh45,000 in compensation for both material and moral damages, along with 9 per cent annual legal interest from the date of filing the case until full payment, in addition to court fees, expenses, and legal costs.
According to court records, the complainant had earlier initiated a criminal case against the defendant. In that case, the court issued a judgment in absentia, sentencing her to three months’ imprisonment and deportation for one offence, and a further three months’ imprisonment along with a six-month ban from using information networks for a second offence. The Court of Appeal upheld the verdict, making it final.
In its civil ruling, the court noted that the defendant’s actions amounted to fault that directly caused moral harm to the complainant. While the claimant had sought Dh45,000 in damages, the court assessed the circumstances and ordered the defendant to pay Dh15,000 as fair compensation for the moral injury suffered.
