ADJD Highlights UAE Legal Framework Governing Crypto Regulation and Mining

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has hosted a specialist legal forum titled “The Legal Framework for Regulating and Mining Cryptocurrencies in Light of UAE National Legislation and International Practices”, bringing together leading experts in law, fintech and cybersecurity to examine the rapidly evolving digital asset landscape.

Held via the Abu Dhabi Judicial Academy’s virtual platform, the forum attracted a wide audience of lawyers and representatives from leading law firms. It underscored ADJD’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the legal community, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. The vision seeks to build a judicial system that safeguards society and the economy while enhancing Abu Dhabi’s global competitiveness and appeal to investors.

Discussions addressed both the technical and legal aspects of cryptocurrencies, including digital contracts, blockchain technology, mining operations, digital wallets, trading mechanisms and the role of cryptographic algorithms in ensuring security and data integrity. The forum also reviewed the regulatory status of cryptocurrencies across various jurisdictions, highlighting the UAE’s pioneering role in this area.

Participants examined key risks such as theft, fraud, illicit trading, money laundering and terrorist financing, alongside judicial approaches to resolving related disputes. The sessions emphasised the applicability of the UAE Penal Code to such offences, as well as the importance of judicial enforcement, technical expertise and jurisdictional competence.

By addressing these issues, the forum reinforced Abu Dhabi’s efforts to balance innovation with strong regulation, strengthening its position as a trusted global hub for finance and technology.
