A husband and wife in Bahrain have been sentenced to three years in prison and fined 2,000 Bahraini dinars ($5,300) each for trafficking a compatriot woman into prostitution under the pretext of offering her work in a beauty salon.

The First High Criminal Court also ordered their permanent deportation after serving their terms and directed them to cover the cost of repatriating the victim.

According to court records, the woman, who came from a low-income family and sought employment to support her elderly mother, was promised work as a hairdresser. On arrival in Bahrain, her passport was seized by the male defendant “for safekeeping” before she was forced into prostitution.

Investigators from the Anti-Human Trafficking Division uncovered the abuse, with the female defendant accused of arranging the sham job offer and facilitating the victim’s travel.
