A chauffeur who fatally struck a young mother as she crossed a road with her stroller, injuring her infant son, has lost his appeal before the Bahrain Supreme Criminal Appeals Court, with his conviction and sentence upheld.

The Bangladeshi private driver had earlier been sentenced by the High Criminal Court to one year in prison for vehicular manslaughter, followed by deportation upon completion of his sentence.

The 38-year-old was found guilty of causing the death of a 26-year-old Yemeni woman who was crossing Mahzoora Avenue in Riffa with her one-and-a-half-year-old son.

He was convicted on multiple charges, including reckless driving, causing wrongful death, property damage, injuring the child, and endangering pedestrians.

The incident occurred on November 30 at around 3 pm, when the vehicle struck the woman and collided with the stroller, throwing the infant onto the road.

A traffic report stated the impact threw the mother nearly 34 metres. She was taken to hospital but died on the way.

The child sustained minor injuries and was treated at hospital before being discharged the following day, though medical records also noted bruising to the liver.

Court documents recorded that the driver denied the charges and claimed he was driving at 60–70 kmph. His defence also alleged the victim crossed at a non-designated point and moved in front of the vehicle.

However, the post-mortem report confirmed severe injuries, including skull fractures and internal bleeding. Toxicology tests found no alcohol or narcotics in either party.
