Dubai Court Fines Motorist Dhs5,000 for Tampering with Vehicle Number Plate
Man found guilty in absentia for obscuring licence plate digit to evade parking fees; court stresses such acts are criminal even without causing harm.
The Dubai Misdemeanour Court has fined an Asian man Dhs5,000 after finding him guilty in absentia of deliberately concealing a digit on his vehicle’s number plate to avoid parking fees.
The case dates back to October 2024, when a police officer on patrol in the Al Qusais area noticed a vehicle with an unclear licence plate while inspecting cars parked in a public lot. On closer examination, authorities found that one of the numbers had been intentionally obscured, rendering the plate non-compliant with legal specifications.
Investigations revealed that the vehicle owner had admitted to marking one of the digits to evade parking charges.
The court underscored that altering or concealing vehicle plate information constitutes a serious breach of traffic regulations and public safety. It further noted that driving or parking a vehicle with unclear or modified plates is a punishable offence, regardless of whether any actual harm results.
