A 32-year-old Gulf national has been sentenced to one year in prison for breaching Dubai’s drug testing regulations and failing to utilise a legal pathway for rehabilitation.

The man had been placed under a structured rehabilitation programme run by Dubai Police, which requires participants to undergo periodic drug testing while remaining under legal supervision. The initiative is designed to support individuals in overcoming substance abuse without immediate punitive action. However, the man failed to adhere to these conditions and was later found to have continued using drugs.

The matter was referred to the Public Prosecution and subsequently taken up by the Court of Misdemeanours. During proceedings, police submitted evidence indicating that the man had purchased narcotics and transferred money to a known dealer. Investigations established that these transactions were intentional and constituted violations of both drug control regulations and financial compliance laws.

After examining the evidence, the court imposed a one-year prison sentence. It also barred the accused from transferring or depositing money to others for a period of two years, whether directly or through intermediaries. Any such transactions during this period would require prior approval from the UAE Central Bank in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. The restriction aims to curb the misuse of financial channels for unlawful activities.

Legal experts note that the case underscores the critical importance of complying with rehabilitation programmes. Authorities in Dubai offer structured opportunities for individuals struggling with substance abuse to recover under supervision, but non-compliance can result in stringent penalties, including imprisonment and financial limitations.

The ruling reinforces a clear message to residents: those given a chance at rehabilitation must strictly follow the prescribed procedures or face serious consequences.

Officials stress that such legal measures are intended to safeguard public health and maintain the integrity of the financial system. The case also illustrates that while the law provides second chances, these opportunities are contingent on adherence to established rules. Failure to do so, as seen in this instance, can lead to severe repercussions.
