Dubai Unveils Futuristic 'Dubai Loop' Transport System in Partnership with Elon Musk

Dubai has announced a groundbreaking transport project in collaboration with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company. Dubbed the ‘Dubai Loop,’ the initiative aims to redefine urban transportation by creating an underground tunnel network that will connect the city’s busiest areas. Spanning 17 kilometers, the project will feature 11 stations and is designed to transport up to 20,000 passengers per hour.
Unveiling at the World Governments Summit
The announcement was made on the third day of the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025, during a virtual conversation between Musk and Omar Al Olama, UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications. Musk likened the concept to a “wormhole,” explaining how it will allow commuters to travel directly from one location to another without intermediate stops.
Crown Prince’s Vision for Dubai’s Transportation Future
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, later shared more insights on the project. He emphasized how Dubai is committed to revolutionizing transportation both above and below ground while setting new global benchmarks for urban mobility.
High-Speed, Sustainable Travel
The Dubai Loop will enable electric-powered travel at speeds of up to 160 kmph, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional transportation. Al Olama highlighted that the system is specifically designed to serve Dubai’s most densely populated areas, significantly reducing travel time and congestion.
Tunnels vs. Airspace Transport
During the discussion, Musk elaborated on The Boring Company’s success in building underground transport systems in cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He contrasted tunnels with air-based transport such as flying taxis and helicopters, noting that the latter come with challenges such as noise pollution, wind force, and risks associated with bad weather conditions. In contrast, underground transport remains unaffected by external factors, making it a safer and more reliable option.
A Safer and More Efficient Transport Solution
Musk also pointed out that tunnels provide resilience in extreme conditions, such as earthquakes or sandstorms, making them one of the safest forms of transport infrastructure. Al Olama expressed gratitude to Musk for the collaboration and confirmed plans to take part in the first test ride of the Dubai Loop.
With the launch of this ambitious project, Dubai is once again demonstrating its commitment to innovation and smart city development, ensuring a future of seamless and efficient urban mobility.
