Georgia Woman Charged with Murder After Taking Pills to End Pregnancy
Infant born prematurely in hospital dies; woman faces additional drug-related charges amid strict state abortion law.
A Georgia woman has been charged with murder after allegedly taking pills to induce an abortion in violation of state law, authorities say.
Alexia Moore, 31, was arrested on March 4, months after she was rushed to the emergency room with severe abdominal pain, according to an arrest warrant affidavit from the Kingsland Police Department.
Police allege that Moore took misoprostol, a drug that can induce abortion. The infant girl was delivered prematurely in the emergency room and suffered major health issues, including respiratory problems. The baby lived for about an hour before passing away.
Georgia law, passed in 2019, bans most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks of gestation. Exceptions exist for medical emergencies and for cases of rape or incest with official documentation, up to 20 weeks of gestation. Moore was reportedly 22 to 24 weeks pregnant at the time, according to medical records cited in the warrant.
Authorities say Moore was found in severe pain at her home on December 30 by a friend, who accompanied her to the hospital. The friend reported that Moore had stated she was taking misoprostol and oxycodone.
Moore faces charges of murder, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of a controlled substance. She has been held at Camden County Jail since her arrest.
District Attorney Keith Higgins of Brunswick is overseeing the case.
