India: Bombay HC Moved in Response of Defamation Case Filed by Bank Over Popular Series

‘Scam 1992’ series which featured the story one of the 1992 Indian Securities Scam, featuring the lead character in the series named Harshad Mehta, had apparently featured a “Bank of Karaj” which closely resembled the Karad Urban Co-operative Bank, triggering them to register a case of Defamation and infringements under Trademark Law and IT Law. Sony Pictures contended that the said Bank in the series appears only for a negligible amount of time and was used to show Bank of Karad considering their widely known involvement in the scam. They also added that a disclaimer was displayed in the beginning of each episode and that the petitioners have no claim. Sony Pictures Networks Pvt. Ltd, further added that they merely broadcasted the series, while another production house is the party responsible for production of the series and submitted on the basis of the above-mentioned arguments that this FIR is without any basis.
