India: High Court Issues Notice to Government on Habitat Depletion of Cranes

The Bombay High Court, has taken a public interest litigation on its own (suo motu), to address the Habitat depletion of Sarus Cranes. The Division Bench of Justice Sunil B. Shukre and Justice Anil S. Kilor heard a Suo Motu PIL raising an issue of fundamental importance to the environment and forest of not only the Vidarbha Region, but the entire country, because the Sarus Crane's habitat is under threat, resulting in dwindling population and further pushing the bird towards extinction. The court further stressed the importance of the issue not just in the region addressed, but for all of India. An amicus curiae assisted the court in this.
