The Kerala Cabinet has appointed advocate Anoop V. Nair as the new State Attorney, entrusting him with the responsibility of coordinating and managing litigation on behalf of the State government before the Kerala High Court.

The appointment was approved at the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday and announced by Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan during a press conference. Nair succeeds advocate N. Manojkumar in the post.

As State Attorney, Nair will work closely with the office of the Advocate General in handling and overseeing legal proceedings involving the State before the High Court.

The Cabinet also cleared the appointment of 40 law officers for the Kerala High Court, including special government pleaders, senior government pleaders and government pleaders.

A Kochi-based lawyer, Nair has more than 23 years of experience practising before various courts and tribunals across Kerala. Enrolled as an advocate in 2002, he has appeared before the Perumbavoor Munsiff-Magistrate Court and the Kerala High Court.

Nair is a founding partner of ASM Attorneys and served as Secretary of the Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association in 2024.

His areas of practice include civil and criminal law, writ jurisdiction, service matters, company law, proceedings under the SARFAESI Act and issues arising under the Panchayath Raj framework. He has also represented several local self government bodies and autonomous institutions before the Kerala High Court.

Earlier, he was a member of the legal advisory panel of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board and played a role in the amendment of its staff service regulations.

Congratulating Nair on his appointment, prominent Dubai-based senior lawyer Dr Sunil Ambalavelil said the appointment was a fitting recognition of his legal acumen, professional integrity and decades of distinguished service to the profession. “Nair's extensive experience across diverse areas of law and his deep understanding of public litigation would greatly benefit the State in handling complex legal matters before the High Court,” he told The Law Reporters.

Dr. Sunil Ambalavelil, a close friend and long-time professional associate of Nair, said the appointment was a matter of pride for the legal fraternity. He expressed confidence that Nair would discharge his responsibilities with distinction and wished him every success in his new role as State Attorney.
