Activist legislators have refiled their impeachment complaint against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte, just 15 days after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. became the subject of a separate impeachment process.

The Makabayan coalition lodged the fifth complaint against Duterte on Monday, following the Supreme Court’s ruling that previous attempts were unconstitutional due to technical issues.

The lawmakers allege Duterte committed “gross abuse of discretionary powers” over at least 612.5 million pesos (Dh38.3 million) in funds, including expenditures on questionable intelligence operations and cash aid grants to individuals not listed as indigent citizens.

The complaint echoes prior allegations of threats against former political allies and mismanagement of government resources. It may be consolidated with an earlier complaint against Duterte endorsed by other lawmakers.

With both the president and vice president now facing impeachment complaints, the Philippines enters a rare political scenario in which its top two officials are simultaneously under formal scrutiny.
