Trivial reasons, social pressure driving early divorces: Ministry of Justice
The UAE is witnessing a surge in divorce cases, with some marriages ending just hours or days after the wedding, prompting alarm from the Ministry of Justice and marriage lawyers. According to official statistics, 448 divorces were recorded across Sharjah (217), Ajman (139), Fujairah (70), and Umm Al Quwain (22) in 2024.

Shockingly, one divorce was registered within 24 hours of marriage. Other short-lived unions included separations at 5 days, 7 days, and within the first month. On the other hand, long-term marriages of up to 47 years also ended, revealing a widespread trend across all age groups and marital stages.

Breakdown by Nationality:

  • 198 Emirati couples

  • 135 expatriate couples

  • 102 cases involving Emirati husbands and non-Emirati wives

  • 13 cases involving Emirati wives and non-Emirati husbands

UAE Personal Status Law: Rights and Reforms

Under Federal Law No. 28 of 2005, the UAE Personal Status Law governs all national citizens and applies to expatriates unless contested. Expats may refer to their home country's laws in marriage and divorce proceedings, where applicable and beneficial.

In 2024, the UAE introduced a new amendment to the Personal Status Law, aiming to bolster family stability, support community development, and reduce impulsive separations.

Experts Weigh In:

Legal specialists and family lawyers attribute early divorces to:

  • Weak foundations in relationships

  • Incompatibility and personality clashes

  • Social media influence

  • Family interference

  • Financial pressure, including high dowries and lavish wedding expenses

Advocates have stressed that the lack of compatibility in educational background, social expectations, and personal interests plays a critical role. They have emphasized the importance of institutional efforts in educating young couples on commitment, conflict resolution, and long-term marital success.

Judicial professionals have also highlighted the misconception that divorce is a quick solution, urging a shift towards fostering communication skills and emotional maturity before and during marriage.

Legal Support for Troubled Marriages:

Couples facing challenges are advised to consult marriage lawyers in the UAE to understand their legal rights, resolve disputes amicably, and explore alternatives to separation when possible.
