Court Adjourns Assault Case as Defence Claims Accused was Mentally Unfit
Lawyer says accused lacked criminal responsibility due to mental illness, seeks psychiatric assessment.
The Sharjah Misdemeanor Court has adjourned proceedings in an assault case in which a man is accused of attacking an Asian national, allegedly causing multiple injuries that led the victim to file a complaint and seek legal action.
The case was previously referred by the relevant authorities to the court for adjudication.
During the latest hearing, the defence lawyer argued that the accused should not be held criminally responsible, claiming he was suffering from a mental illness that impaired his awareness at the time of the incident. The lawyer contended that the defendant’s medical condition meant he lacked the capacity to understand or control his actions, and therefore could not be held accountable in law.
The defence further requested that the court acquit the accused and refer him to a specialised psychiatric committee for a detailed evaluation of his mental state and his level of responsibility at the time of the alleged offence.
After reviewing the submissions, the court decided to postpone the hearing to complete the necessary procedures and examine the defence requests before issuing a ruling in the case.
