Sharjah Rental Scam: Three Jailed for Deceiving Tenant with Fake Lease

Three people have been sentenced to one year in jail followed by deportation by the Sharjah Court of Appeal for fraudulently taking money from a man by falsely claiming they could rent out a residential unit they did not own.

The accused allegedly used a social media advertisement offering an apartment at an attractive rental price to lure the victim. After contacting the listed numbers, the victim inspected the property, agreed to rent it, paid part of the rent and submitted the required documents pending completion of the tenancy procedures.

One of the defendants later sent him a copy of a fake lease contract, claiming it was proof of his right to use the apartment. When the victim sought to verify the document with the authorities, he discovered that the property belonged to another person and that the contract details did not match official records.

The victim reported the matter to the authorities, leading to investigations and the referral of the accused to the judiciary.

The Sharjah Misdemeanors Court had initially sentenced the defendants to three months in jail followed by deportation and ordered the confiscation of seized items. However, following an appeal by the Public Prosecution, the Court of Appeal increased the sentence to one year in prison, while upholding the deportation and confiscation orders.
