UAE Sets Out Rules For Workers Changing Jobs After Contract Ends
Workers can seek new employment during grace period, but probation violations may trigger one-year work permit ban.
The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has clarified the rules governing workers who wish to move to a new employer after their employment contract ends, while warning that certain violations could result in a one-year ban on obtaining a new work permit.
According to the ministry, employees are allowed to transfer to another company once their employment relationship ends, including in cases where a contract expires or both parties mutually agree to terminate it.
However, the ministry said workers who leave a job during the probation period without serving the required notice period could face a one-year work permit ban. The same penalty may apply if a complaint of work abandonment against the employee is found to be valid.
The ministry also confirmed that workers may legally remain in the UAE after their contract ends during the designated grace period, giving them time to either secure a new job, adjust their residency status, or complete departure procedures.
In a recently issued guidance manual, the ministry said employment contracts may be converted between different work models — including full-time, part-time, temporary, flexible, remote and job-sharing arrangements — provided both employer and employee agree and all financial dues linked to the original contract are settled.
The ministry further warned employees against participating in what it described as “random work stoppages”, stating that incitement or involvement in such actions could lead to legal penalties including fines, imprisonment and deportation.
Workers facing disputes were urged to use official legal channels and approach the relevant authorities instead of disrupting work operations.
