Avoid Overstay Penalties: UAE’s 30-Day Visa Grace Period Ends Today
Special relief for stranded travellers ends today, with normal visa and overstay rules now set to apply.
The UAE’s special 30-day visa grace period for travellers affected by regional flight disruptions comes to an end today, July 9, marking the close of a humanitarian measure introduced to assist those who were unable to leave the country because of exceptional circumstances in the region.
The relief was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) in June after widespread airspace closures and flight suspensions disrupted travel across parts of the Middle East earlier this year. The initiative provided affected individuals with additional time to either regularise their immigration status or depart the UAE without incurring overstay penalties.
With the grace period now expiring, eligible visa holders, residents and other affected travellers who have not yet taken the necessary steps are advised to act immediately, as the standard immigration regulations and overstay fines are expected to apply from tomorrow.
The UAE introduced the temporary relief following regional travel disruptions caused by the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran. Airspace closures and flight cancellations from February 28, 2026, left many travellers unable to leave the country despite the expiry of their visas.
Recognising the exceptional circumstances, the UAE waived overstay fines for stranded individuals and later announced a final 30-day grace period, running from June 10 to July 9, 2026, after regional stability improved and normal flight operations resumed.
Who Was Eligible?
The grace period applied to individuals who had previously been granted exemption from overstay fines because they were unable to leave the UAE due to the regional travel disruptions.
What Options Were Available?
During the grace period, eligible individuals could choose one of two options:
Regularise their Immigration Status
Those wishing to remain in the UAE were allowed to amend their legal status through the appropriate immigration procedures, including:
- Converting to a valid residency status.
- Obtaining employment visa sponsorship.
- Applying through other legally recognised visa or residency pathways.
Leave the UAE
Travellers who intended to return to their home countries or another destination were permitted to depart under the normal exit procedures without additional preliminary requirements.
What Happens After Today?
With the grace period ending on July 9, individuals who have neither regularised their immigration status nor departed the UAE may become subject to the country's standard immigration regulations. This could include overstay fines and other legal consequences associated with remaining in the UAE without valid immigration status.
Travellers affected by the earlier disruptions are therefore advised to ensure their immigration status is fully compliant to avoid penalties and potential complications with future travel or visa applications.
