Dubai Court Orders Renter to Reimburse Car Hire Firm for Fines, Salik Charges
Company awarded Dh8,735 plus 5% interest after court finds renter liable for traffic violations and toll fees.
A Dubai court has ordered a vehicle renter to pay Dh8,735 to a car rental company towards traffic fines, Salik toll charges and other dues arising from a lease agreement, along with 5 per cent legal interest from the date the case was filed until full settlement.
The Civil Court, however, rejected the company’s separate claim for compensation, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to support the request.
According to court records, the dispute arose after a car rental company filed a lawsuit against a client over unpaid amounts linked to a vehicle lease agreement signed in October 2025. The company also sought Dh10,000 in compensation for material and moral damages, alleging that the renter had failed to return the vehicle on the agreed date.
The company told the court that the lease contract had been extended several times and that, during the rental period, the vehicle accumulated traffic fines amounting to Dh5,660 and Salik fees totalling Dh350, in addition to other contractual dues. The total amount claimed stood at Dh8,735.
As evidence, the company submitted copies of the lease agreement and its extensions, along with records of traffic violations and Salik charges. It also stated that it had lodged a police complaint after the renter allegedly refused to return the vehicle.
In its ruling, the court said the lease agreement clearly obliged the renter to pay the agreed rental charges and any liabilities arising from the use of the vehicle.
“The company proved the appellee’s liability for the claimed amount through the submitted documents, while the appellee did not attend the court sessions and did not provide any evidence of payment or anything to challenge those documents,” the court said.
The court dismissed the compensation claim on the grounds that it was not supported by sufficient proof, but ordered the renter to pay Dh8,735 along with 5 per cent legal interest, court fees and related expenses.
