Rapper and fashion mogul A$AP Rocky, legal name Rakim Mayers, has been acquitted of all charges in a Los Angeles court after facing allegations of firing a gun at a former friend during an altercation in 2021. The jury found him not guilty of two felony assault charges, which carried a potential 24-year prison sentence.
The highly anticipated verdict was met with jubilation in the courtroom. As the decision was announced, cheers erupted, and Mr. Mayers rushed towards his family and longtime partner, pop star Rihanna, who was seated with their two young sons. The rapper even leaped over a wooden barrier to embrace them.
Visibly emotional, Mr. Mayers expressed his gratitude, stating, "Thank God for saving my life." He also thanked the jury members for their decision.
The case revolved around an alleged shooting incident that took place on November 6, 2021. Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli, accused Mr. Mayers of pulling a gun on him and firing multiple shots, one of which allegedly grazed his knuckles.
However, Mr. Mayers maintained his innocence, asserting that the weapon in question was a harmless prop gun and that Mr. Ephron fabricated the claims for financial gain. The weapon was never recovered by authorities, leaving the case heavily reliant on testimonies and surveillance footage.
The trial featured intense exchanges, particularly when Mr. Ephron took the stand as the prosecution’s key witness. He testified that Mr. Mayers had pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him. However, inconsistencies in his account raised doubts among jurors.
While Mr. Ephron produced shell casings as evidence, authorities did not find any at the crime scene, leading the defense to argue that they had been planted. Moreover, Mr. Ephron waited two days before reporting the incident and sought medical treatment only after returning to New York.
During the trial, another witness, A$AP Twelvyy, was questioned about a photograph linked to the case. When pressed on the meaning of the letters "AWGE" found on Mr. Mayers' furniture, the rapper dramatically interrupted the proceedings, instructing the witness not to answer—an unusual move in a courtroom setting.
With the trial now concluded, A$AP Rocky is set to move forward with his career. The rapper is preparing to release his first solo album in nearly a decade and is slated to co-headline the Rolling Loud festival in Los Angeles in March 2025.
Beyond music, he is also set to appear alongside Denzel Washington in Spike Lee's upcoming film, Highest 2 Lowest, which is expected to be released in the coming months.
For now, the acquittal marks the end of a legal ordeal, allowing the rapper to refocus on his professional endeavors and personal life with Rihanna and their children.
