Court Grants Dh15,000 Compensation for Damages in Al Ain Car Theft Case
Civil court upholds criminal findings and orders offender to compensate vehicle owner for losses and emotional harm.
An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a man to pay Dh15,000 in compensation to a vehicle owner after being held liable for damages arising from the theft of the owner’s car in Al Ain. The defendant had previously been criminally convicted by the Al Ain Public Prosecution, a ruling that was upheld on appeal and became final after no further challenges were filed before the Court of Cassation.
The judgment, issued by the Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Court on November 24, 2025, followed a civil claim filed by the vehicle owner seeking compensation for the harm suffered. Court records show that the defendant stole the plaintiff’s car and caused both material and moral damages.
The civil court noted that, in accordance with Article 88 of the UAE Evidence Law, the criminal judgment was binding on the civil proceedings with respect to the facts of the offence. The court confirmed that the defendant’s responsibility for the theft had already been conclusively established.
It further stated that the defendant’s conduct amounted to a wrongful act under Article 282 of the UAE Civil Transactions Law, which obliges individuals who cause harm to compensate the affected party.
In determining the compensation, the court observed that the theft resulted in physical damage to the vehicle as well as emotional distress for the owner. The judge found that Dh15,000 was an appropriate amount to fully address the harm suffered.
The defendant was additionally ordered to pay court fees and legal expenses.
