Abu Dhabi Court Orders Woman to Pay Dh20,000 Over Social Media Insult Case
Judge finds online abuse harmed two women’s honour and reputation, orders compensation and legal costs.
A woman has been ordered to pay Dh20,000 in compensation after an Abu Dhabi court ruled that insulting comments she posted on social media damaged the honour and reputation of two women.
The ruling was issued by the Abu Dhabi Court for Family, Civil and Administrative Cases, following an earlier criminal conviction against the defendant for using abusive and defamatory language online.
The two complainants had filed a civil claim seeking Dh51,000 in damages, stating that they suffered both material and emotional harm due to the incident. They also requested that the defendant be directed to cover legal costs and fees.
Court records showed that the woman had posted offensive remarks that harmed the complainants’ honour, prompting them to initiate criminal proceedings. After the criminal court found her guilty, the victims moved the civil court seeking financial compensation.
In its judgment, the court determined that the defendant’s actions caused reputational and psychological damage. It awarded the two women Dh20,000 in compensation and ordered the defendant to bear the related legal expenses.
