Court Orders Man To Pay Woman Dh30,000 For Social Media Insult
Court finds criminal conviction established the insult and awards compensation for the woman’s psychological harm.
The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court has ordered a man to pay Dh30,000 in compensation to a woman for insulting her through a social media application.
The woman had filed a lawsuit seeking Dh100,000 in compensation for the material and psychological harm she said she suffered, in addition to legal fees and expenses.
She told the court that the man had insulted her using an information technology means, resulting in criminal proceedings against him. The criminal case ended with his conviction.
The civil court noted that, under the Civil Transactions Law, anyone who causes harm to another is required to compensate the injured party.
The court found that the earlier criminal judgment had established that the man had insulted the woman. Taking into account the moral and psychological harm caused, it ruled that Dh30,000 was an appropriate amount of compensation.
The court therefore ordered the man to pay the woman Dh30,000 for the damages she suffered.
