Oman’s Public Prosecution has cautioned the public against publishing offensive content on social media, particularly posts targeting other countries, their national symbols or their people.

In an advisory, the Public Prosecution urged individuals to exercise restraint and responsibility when expressing their views, emphasising the need to use sound judgement in both words and actions. It stressed that online content should not undermine the diplomatic relations Oman maintains with other countries.

The authority warned that anyone found violating the law could face legal action. This applies not only to those who originally publish unlawful material but also to individuals who republish, share or encourage others to circulate such content, as well as those involved in any other conduct prohibited under the applicable legislation.

The Public Prosecution specifically referred to Articles 20, 23 and 26 of Oman’s Cybercrime Law, stating that violations would be addressed under the relevant legal provisions.

The warning highlights the legal responsibilities associated with online communication and reinforces the need for social media users to ensure that their posts and interactions do not offend other nations or affect Oman’s international relations.
