A driver who intentionally rammed another motorist’s vehicle and verbally abused him in public has been ordered to pay Dh20,000 in compensation.

The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Court ruled that the defendant had chased the victim along a public road before deliberately crashing into his car twice, inflicting significant damage and rendering the vehicle unusable.

The situation worsened when the motorist threatened and insulted the victim in full public view, using offensive language that harmed his dignity and reputation.

The incident triggered an official probe, after which authorities referred the matter to the criminal court. The defendant was convicted by the Bani Yas Misdemeanours Court, with the judgment upheld on appeal and subsequently affirmed by the Court of Cassation, making the conviction final and binding.

Before the civil court, the victim said the attack caused both financial losses and psychological suffering. He explained that he could not repair his vehicle until the criminal proceedings were completed and had to repeatedly seek approval to carry out repairs, leading to prolonged disruption and distress.

The court observed that the criminal ruling had firmly established the defendant’s liability, confirming that he had deliberately pursued the victim in a manner that put his life and safety at risk. Judges also noted that the accused had effectively used his vehicle as a weapon by carrying out repeated intentional collisions, in addition to issuing threats and hurling public insults.

The claimant had earlier been awarded temporary compensation of Dh10,000. He later filed a follow-up civil claim seeking full compensation for the harm suffered. After examining the case, the court directed the defendant to pay an additional Dh20,000 in damages.
