Man Ordered to Pay Dh40,000 For Stalking and Defaming Woman
Al Ain court awards compensation after criminal conviction for threats, harassment and endangering victim’s life
The Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Cases Court has ordered a man to pay Dh40,000 in compensation to a woman after finding him liable for threatening, insulting and defaming her on social media, as well as stalking her on the road and at her workplace.
The woman had filed a civil lawsuit seek ing Dh40,000 in damages for the psychological, moral and material harm she suffered as a result of the man’s actions. She also requested nine per cent legal interest from the date the case was filed until full payment, in addition to fees and expenses.
According to court records, the defendant repeatedly threatened and insulted the woman online, followed her on the road and to her workplace, and recklessly obstructed her path in a manner that nearly endangered her life. He was also accused of vandalising her vehicle, causing further material loss.
The incidents had previously been examined in a criminal case, in which the man was convicted of threatening and insulting the victim on social media, committing acts that endangered her life and the lives of others, and damaging her car. He was fined Dh50,000, a ruling later upheld by the Court of Appeal.
In its civil judgment, the court held that the fear, anxiety and distress suffered by the woman, as well as the damage to her vehicle, were direct consequences of the defendant’s proven misconduct.
The court concluded that the man bears legal responsibility for his actions and must compensate the woman Dh40,000 for the harm she endured.
