Al Ain Court Fines Two Dh50,000 Each For Assaulting Petrol Station Worker

Al Ain Misdemeanour Court has convicted two defendants of assaulting a petrol station employee while he was carrying out his duties, following a dispute over cleaning the windscreen of a vehicle, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said on social media.

The court ordered each defendant to pay a fine of Dh50,000 for assaulting a public service employee and disturbing public order. It also sentenced both to two months of community service at the same petrol station where the incident occurred.

The case arose after the defendants allegedly assaulted the employee following a dispute over cleaning the windscreen of the first defendant’s vehicle. The driver asked the employee to clean the windscreen but was told that the station was busy and that he would have to wait.

An argument then broke out and escalated into an assault, leaving the employee with pain and bruising, according to a medical report submitted in the case.

The court based its verdict on evidence contained in the case file, including surveillance camera footage showing the argument and assault, the defendants’ admissions before the court, witness statements and the medical report.

In its ruling, the court cited provisions of the Crimes and Penalties Law criminalising the use of force or violence against, or resistance to, a public employee or a person assigned to perform a public service while carrying out, or because of, their duties.

The court stressed that compliance with the law and resorting to official channels to resolve disputes are the proper ways to avoid legal accountability.
