UAE Court Orders Fraudsters to Repay Nearly Dh15,000 in Fake Recharge Scam
Victim awarded additional Dh3,000 compensation after court finds Scammers used bogus mobile top-up platform to steal money
Two young men have been ordered by an Al Ain court to repay nearly Dh15,000 to a victim after using a fake mobile phone recharge website to fraudulently obtain money.
The Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Court also directed the defendants to pay Dh3,000 in compensation for the financial losses and emotional distress suffered by the victim following the online scam.
According to court documents, the victim filed a lawsuit after discovering that he had been deceived through a fraudulent website designed to imitate legitimate mobile phone top-up services.
Believing the platform to be genuine, the victim completed an online payment transaction before later realising he had fallen prey to electronic fraud and lost his money.
He subsequently approached the court seeking recovery of the amount taken from him, along with compensation for the damages caused by the incident.
The court ruled in favour of the plaintiff after concluding that the defendants had unlawfully acquired the funds through deceptive means, making them legally liable to return the money.
In its judgment, the court said the victim suffered both material and moral harm after being deprived of his funds and exposed to online fraud, justifying compensation in addition to repayment of the stolen amount.
The ruling comes as UAE authorities continue to warn residents against fake websites and fraudulent online payment platforms impersonating telecom and digital service providers to steal money and banking details.
Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly advised the public to use only official applications and verified payment portals, avoid clicking on suspicious links and carefully verify website addresses before making online transactions.
