Three Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Bahrain on Charges of Spying for Iran
The defendants were convicted in two separate espionage cases involving alleged links to the IRGC.
Bahrain's High Criminal Court has sentenced three people to life imprisonment after convicting them in two separate espionage cases involving alleged cooperation with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and assisting it in carrying out hostile acts against the Kingdom.
The court also ordered the confiscation of all items seized during the investigations.
According to Bahrain's Public Prosecution, the defendants were accused of supplying sensitive information to the IRGC, including details of strategic locations that could be targeted during Iranian attacks, actions prosecutors said posed a serious threat to the country's security and the safety of its residents.
Two Separate Espionage Cases
The convictions stem from two independent investigations.
In the first case, one of the defendants was a fugitive living outside Bahrain and was already wanted by the authorities on security-related charges. Prosecutors alleged that he recruited another individual inside Bahrain to gather and relay information about vital locations across the Kingdom that could be targeted during what authorities described as Iranian aggression.
In the second case, another defendant was accused of communicating with an online account allegedly affiliated with the IRGC. Prosecutors said the individual sent video footage of Iranian attacks on key installations in Bahrain and shared the geographical coordinates of strategic locations that could be targeted, thereby endangering public safety.
Investigation and Trial
The Public Prosecution said it launched investigations immediately after receiving reports of both incidents. Authorities questioned the defendants who were present in Bahrain, recorded witness statements and instructed technical experts to examine electronic devices seized during the investigation.
According to prosecutors, the evidence established that the information allegedly provided by the defendants formed an important basis for hostile Iranian attacks against several vital facilities and installations in Bahrain, threatening the country's security and stability.
Following the completion of the investigations, the defendants were referred to the High Criminal Court.
The two cases were heard separately over multiple hearings. Bahrain's Public Prosecution said all legal safeguards were observed throughout the proceedings, including ensuring the presence of defence lawyers and allowing the accused to present their defence before the court delivered its verdict.
The High Criminal Court ultimately sentenced all three defendants to life imprisonment and ordered the confiscation of the seized materials.
