Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party after nine years in office, stating he will remain in his role until a new leader is chosen. The announcement comes amid growing dissatisfaction among Liberal lawmakers and declining public support.
At a news conference, Trudeau emphasized the importance of offering Canadians a "real choice" in the next election. He acknowledged internal challenges within his party that hindered his effectiveness as a leader.
Trudeau's popularity has waned in recent years due to rising living costs and a national housing shortage. Polls suggest the Liberals are poised to lose significantly to the opposition Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, in the upcoming election, mandated to occur by October 2025.
The resignation follows a tumultuous period, including the departure of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who publicly criticized Trudeau's leadership style. Trudeau plans to remain prime minister until March 24, when parliament resumes, allowing time for the Liberals to select a new leader.
This marks the end of a significant political era, as Trudeau, one of Canada's longest-serving leaders, first took office in 2015 and led the Liberals to three consecutive electoral victories.
