An Abu Dhabi court has awarded Dhs5,000 in moral damages to a woman after ruling that her reputation was harmed when a defendant published her personal photos without permission on social media.

The plaintiff had also sought Dh51,000 in total compensation, including material damages, and requested that the defendant cover court fees and attorney’s expenses. However, the court rejected the claim for material damages due to lack of supporting evidence.

The case followed a criminal conviction in which the defendant was fined Dh20,000 for one charge and sentenced to two months in prison for another. On appeal, the prison sentence was suspended for three years from the date the judgment became final. The ruling is now final.

The court noted that the defendant’s actions caused moral harm, affecting the plaintiff’s honour and reputation. Taking all factors into account, it exercised its discretion to award Dh5,000 for the moral damage suffered.
