Salon Ordered to Pay Dh20,000 After Beauty Treatment Leaves Woman with Facial Burns

A Dubai Civil Court has ordered a beauty salon owner and one of her employees to jointly pay Dh20,000 in compensation to a woman who suffered facial burns during a beauty treatment session.

The ruling followed a final criminal verdict that convicted the salon owner, sentencing her to one month in jail with execution suspended and imposing a Dh5,000 fine. The verdict was later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

The case dates back to January 2024, when the woman visited the salon with her minor daughter for a skin bleaching treatment. During the procedure, a substance unsuitable for the treatment was used, and safety measures were allegedly not followed, resulting in facial injuries to both the mother and daughter.

Medical and forensic reports showed that the mother sustained second-degree superficial burns, which healed within less than 20 days. Her daughter, however, suffered permanent facial pigmentation, which was assessed as a 3 per cent permanent disability.

Following the criminal proceedings, the mother filed a civil lawsuit seeking Dh50,000 in compensation for the physical, financial and emotional damages suffered by herself and her daughter.

The court rejected the claim related to the daughter, ruling that it had been filed by a person without legal capacity to represent her, as no formal legal representation by her natural guardian had been established. However, the court accepted the mother’s claim filed in her personal capacity.

The court noted that the criminal judgment had already established the fault and liability of the defendants, and the issue could not be reconsidered before the civil court.

It found that the woman had suffered physical and psychological harm, including facial burns, medical expenses and the emotional distress caused by the injury.

The court ordered the salon owner and employee to jointly pay Dh20,000 as compensation for the material and moral damages, along with legal interest at 5 per cent from the date the judgment became final until full payment. They were also ordered to bear the legal costs and expenses.
