Dubai Court Fines Couple Dh16,000 for Mutual Assault in Domestic Dispute
Both husband and wife found guilty after violent argument led to property damage and cross-accusations.
A Dubai court has fined a married couple Dh8,000 each after finding both guilty of assaulting one another during a domestic dispute that turned violent.
The Misdemeanours and Violations Court issued the ruling, concluding a case that gained attention for its series of conflicting accusations and counterclaims.
According to court records, the incident took place in March when a housemaid alerted police that her employer, an Arab woman, had been attacked by her husband at their home in Al Barsha. The maid said the husband had struck his wife with a palm branch during an argument and confiscated her phone to stop her from calling for help.
As the altercation intensified, the husband told the maid to take their child to another room. The wife later left the house and, in apparent retaliation, smashed the windshield of her husband’s luxury car, causing severe damage to its bodywork.
A police officer testified that the husband denied assaulting his wife, claiming self-defence and alleging that her injuries were self-inflicted during her own aggression. He said the dispute arose because he had delayed paying instalments for a car rented for her, adding that she intentionally damaged his vehicle, causing losses of about Dh45,000.
The wife, however, insisted that her husband had attacked her during one of their recurring marital quarrels and had taken her phone to stop her from reporting the assault. She also said she had previously filed a complaint against him and refused reconciliation.
A forensic report from Dubai Police confirmed that both husband and wife sustained injuries consistent with a mutual physical altercation.
Based on the evidence, the court found both parties guilty of assault and imposed a fine of Dh8,000 each.
