The Dubai Court of Appeal has overturned part of a ruling issued by the Court of First Instance against an Asian maid, reducing her fine from Dh3,000 to Dh1,500. The case involved a dog attack in which a 14-year-old boy was bitten inside an elevator.

The appeal judges ruled that the maid was guilty of negligence for failing to take necessary precautions to control the dog in her care. This failure led to the dog attacking and injuring the teenager.

According to case details, the boy’s mother filed a report stating that she resides in the Emirates Hills area, and that her son was attacked by the dog while entering the lift. The boy suffered an injury to his right leg and was immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment. She confirmed that the dog belonged to the maid, who had failed to prevent the incident.

During the investigation, the defendant denied any negligence. She told authorities she had been working for her employer for three months and, on the day of the incident, was standing with the leashed dog outside the lift on the sixth floor.

She explained that when the lift doors suddenly opened, the dog leapt inside and bit the child. She said she was shocked by the animal’s behaviour, immediately pulled it back to the apartment, and did not know why it had attacked.

Despite her defence, the court concluded she was responsible for not preventing the danger posed by the dog. The appeal ruling upheld her conviction but reduced the fine to Dh1,500.
