A shocking crime in Dubai has led to a 38-year-old Ghanaian man standing trial after allegedly killing his 32-year-old Nigerian girlfriend during an alcohol-fuelled dispute.

The incident took place in July 2024, when fire safety inspectors detected a foul smell from a residential apartment during a routine check. Initially suspecting spoiled food, they entered the flat only to discover the decomposed body of a woman covered in a black cloth.

The Dubai Police operations room was immediately notified, and a team from the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, patrol officers, CID detectives, and forensic experts arrived at the scene. Within 24 hours, the accused was identified through swift investigation.

Police records revealed that the man, who shared the flat with his wife and other tenants, had orchestrated circumstances leading up to the crime. Two days before the incident, he had evicted all tenants under the pretext of a lease expiry and sent his wife to stay with friends.

With the flat empty, the accused invited his girlfriend over. They consumed alcohol and later engaged in intimacy. An argument broke out when the woman demanded more alcohol, but the man claimed he could not afford another bottle. The quarrel escalated, leading the man to strike her on the head with a heavy stone, resulting in her death.

After committing the act, he covered the body and fled. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime, and the case was referred to the Public Prosecution. The Public Prosecution has officially transferred the case to court under the provisions of UAE criminal law.

The trial now proceeds in the Dubai courts, with the legal process focusing on the severe violation of the country’s criminal law.
