The Dubai Criminal Misdemeanour Court has sentenced an Asian man to one year in prison and imposed the same term in absentia on his Arab accomplice for defrauding an Arab investor of Dh210,000 through a forged hotel lease agreement.

The court also ordered the two to jointly pay a fine of Dh210,000 and ruled for their deportation after serving their sentences.

According to case records, the investor filed a complaint stating he was deceived by the defendants, who posed as a hotel manager and a real estate broker. They convinced him to rent an entire floor in a Dubai hotel for Dh380,000, collecting Dh210,000 upfront and a deferred cheque for the balance.

Investigations revealed that the main defendant instructed the investor to issue the cheque without naming a beneficiary, claiming the details would be added later once the hotel approved the contract. He also assured the investor that the floor would be ready within 10 to 20 days after renovations.

However, three days later, the investor’s friend advised him to verify the lease with the hotel. When presented, the hotel’s management confirmed the contract was forged. A staff member added that the defendant had used his family ties with one of the hotel’s investors to gain credibility.

Police were alerted, leading to the arrest of the Asian suspect. He confessed to orchestrating the scam with the Arab accomplice and admitted that the money was passed on to a third person who had masterminded the fraud.
