Dubai Police have foiled an audacious attempt to steal one of the world’s rarest diamonds -- a 21-carat Fancy Intense pink stone valued at Dh91.8 million ($25 million) -- arresting three suspects within eight hours of the crime being reported.

Authorities said the gang, all of Asian nationality, orchestrated the heist through a year-long scheme dubbed Operation Pink Diamond. Disguised with fake identities, luxury cars, five-star hotel meetings, and a supposed “gem expert,” the men convinced a Dubai-based trader to remove the gem from secure storage and display it at a private villa.

It was there the trio seized the diamond, which has a global rarity rate of just 0.01 per cent. But Dubai Police’s General Department of Criminal Investigation and Criminology swiftly traced and raided their residences.

The suspects, who initially hid together before dispersing to different locations, were caught in coordinated raids. The diamond was eventually found concealed inside a small refrigerator, awaiting smuggling to an unnamed Asian country.

The trader, operating in Dubai since 2005, praised the authorities’ speed and precision. “Within minutes of calling 999, patrols arrived and began investigating. By the next morning, I was told the suspects were in custody and the diamond recovered. Their professionalism was astonishing,” he said.
