Residents and businesses in Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) are set to experience a new era of convenience with the launch of the UAE’s first commercial drone delivery service. Whether it’s food, medicines, or other essential items, deliveries will now take to the skies with this innovative service.
The system, launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), represents the Middle East’s first drone delivery network of its kind.
Dubai Silicon Oasis, a hub for knowledge and innovation under the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ), has been chosen as the launch site for this groundbreaking initiative.
The launch event was attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group. Sheikh Hamdan himself placed the inaugural order using the drone system at the Rochester Institute of Technology-Dubai (RIT-Dubai), a key landing point within the DSO network. The delivery, made from a designated take-off point, was successfully completed, marking a historic moment for the region.
The service is spearheaded by Keeta Drone, a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Meituan. The company has secured the first-ever commercial license in the UAE for 'Beyond Visual Line of Sight' (BVLOS) drone operations, issued by the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority. This certification allows drones to operate beyond the operator's immediate visual range, significantly enhancing delivery capabilities.
Keeta Drone will operate across four predefined routes within DSO, covering locations such as RIT-Dubai and Dubai Digital Park. These routes will be powered by the M-Drone Gen 3, a six-rotor drone equipped with advanced hardware and a proprietary intelligent dispatch system. The drones, capable of carrying up to 2.3 kilograms, are designed to offer safe, efficient, and reliable logistics solutions tailored to urban environments.
“Dubai’s demand for on-demand delivery services, coupled with operational challenges such as extreme weather, highlights the potential of drone delivery to enhance efficiency and reliability,” said Dr. Yinian Mao, Vice President of Meituan and President of Keeta Drone.
With its track record in China, where it operates 53 routes in cities like Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, Keeta Drone has already completed over 400,000 deliveries. It offers a wide range of products, from food to daily essentials, across various locations, including offices, residential areas, parks, and tourist spots.
The introduction of drone delivery in Dubai Silicon Oasis represents a significant leap in urban logistics, aligning with Dubai's vision of becoming a global innovation hub. By integrating cutting-edge technology with urban infrastructure, the service is set to redefine customer experiences and boost industry resilience.
This initiative not only enhances Dubai's logistics capabilities but also positions the city as a leader in leveraging emerging technologies for sustainable and efficient urban living. With its promising start, the future of drone deliveries in the UAE looks poised for rapid growth.
