Elon Musk’s X Settles Trump Lawsuit Over Social Media Ban

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has agreed to a $10 million settlement in a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump over his ban from Twitter following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Trump sued Twitter and its former CEO, Jack Dorsey, arguing that his suspension was unjustified. The ban was imposed after Trump’s remarks, which were perceived as encouraging violence during the insurrection, led to social media giants removing him from their platforms.
More than 140 law enforcement officers sustained injuries in the violent attack, as pro-Trump rioters armed with flagpoles, bats, and other weapons stormed the Capitol. Twitter, along with other platforms, cited concerns that Trump’s repeated claims of election fraud could incite further violence.
Following his acquisition of Twitter and its rebranding as X, Musk reinstated Trump’s account and publicly supported him during the latest presidential race. Trump has since appointed Musk as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency.
This settlement follows Meta’s January agreement to pay Trump $25 million to resolve a similar lawsuit regarding his suspension from Facebook and Instagram after the Capitol riot. However, Meta did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
After assuming office, Trump issued pardons to over 1,500 supporters involved in the Capitol attack and directed that all pending criminal cases against them be dismissed.
X has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the settlement.
