Gene Hackman and Wife Found Dead in New Mexico Home: Police Launch Investigation
Authorities Say Deaths Are ‘Suspicious Enough’ to Warrant Further Inquiry

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities confirmed the presence of their deceased dog alongside them. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office deemed the circumstances of their deaths “suspicious enough” to require further investigation, though no immediate signs of foul play were found.
Hackman, known for his legendary performances in The French Connection and Unforgiven, was discovered in a side room near the kitchen, while Arakawa, a classical pianist, was found in the bathroom.
Unanswered Questions Surrounding Their Deaths
Officials provided an update, stating that both individuals appeared to have been deceased for "quite a while." However, officials have not yet determined an exact timeframe.
While no external injuries were observed, the search warrant described signs of decomposition and mummification on Arakawa’s body, suggesting the couple had been dead for an extended period.
Authorities discovered a portable heater near Arakawa’s head, which may have been knocked over if she had collapsed suddenly. Prescription bottles and scattered pills were also found in the bathroom.
Investigators Probe Possible Causes of Death
Given the unusual circumstances, law enforcement is exploring all possible causes, including carbon monoxide poisoning, natural causes, or other health-related factors.
-
Toxicology tests have been requested to detect any harmful substances in their systems.
-
The fire department found no signs of a gas leak or carbon monoxide presence in the house.
-
The couple's German Shepherd was also found dead in a bathroom closet, adding another layer of mystery.
Two maintenance workers, who had routine access to the property, stated that their last communication with the couple was two weeks ago. One of them was the 911 caller, who discovered the bodies and reported the open front door.
No Signs of Forced Entry or Burglary
Despite concerns over an open front door, investigators found no signs of forced entry, disturbance, or stolen items.
Authorities noted that the couple owned a 2,300-square-foot ranch-style home in a gated Santa Fe community, valued at approximately $1 million.
Two additional dogs were found alive—one inside and one outside—raising further questions about the conditions leading up to the couple’s deaths.
Investigation Continues as Authorities Await Toxicology Results
While the official cause of death remains unknown, law enforcement is treating the case with caution. Toxicology reports and autopsy results will determine whether foul play, environmental factors, or health conditions were involved.
Authorities have assured the public that every possible lead is being examined. Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
