The Delhi High Court on Thursday heard a bitter inheritance dispute between Karisma Kapoor’s children and their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, over the estate of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur.

Appearing for Kapoor’s children, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani accused Priya Kapur of forging Sunjay Kapur’s will and attempting to seize control of his assets soon after his death. He alleged that the move was intended to reduce the children’s share to just 26 per cent while giving Priya and her minor son nearly 75 per cent control of the family trust.

“The tearing hurry was so that the children’s share is restricted to 26% and she appropriates the rest. This is no benign stepmother. This is Cinderella’s stepmother,” Jethmalani told the court.

He further argued that by publicly claiming the children had received nearly ₹2,000 crore, Priya Kapur had made them potential targets for kidnapping.

The petition, filed by the siblings, seeks partition and protection of their share in their father’s estate and requests the court to restrain Priya Kapur from creating third-party rights over any assets.

The contested will, dated March 21, 2025, allegedly transfers Sunjay Kapur’s entire personal estate to Priya Kapur. Her lawyers, however, maintain that the document was properly executed long before his death and that assets worth around ₹1,900 crore have already been transferred to the children.

Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur were married between 2003 and 2016 and have two children. Following their divorce, Sunjay Kapur married Priya Sachdev Kapur.

During Thursday’s hearing, Justice Jyoti Singh examined a sealed cover containing the will and a list of assets submitted by Priya Kapur. The court observed that the list lacked signatures and directed her to refile the document with a signed affidavit.

The hearing will continue on Monday, when Jethmalani will complete his submissions before lawyers representing Priya Kapur, executor Shradha Suri Marwah, and Rani Kapur (Sunjay Kapur’s mother) present their arguments.
