Karnataka High Court Relaxes Dress Code for Advocates in District and Trial Courts During Summer
Black Coats Optional from March 15 to May 31 to Alleviate Heat Discomfort

In response to representations from the Advocates' Association of Bengaluru (AAB) and the Karnataka State Bar Council, the Karnataka High Court has granted advocates practicing in district and trial courts an exemption from wearing black coats during the summer months. This relaxation is effective from March 15 to May 31.
Background and Decision
The AAB submitted a representation on March 3, requesting an exemption from wearing black coats during the summer. The Karnataka State Bar Council followed with a similar request on March 4. Considering these appeals, the High Court convened a meeting on March 7 and decided to implement the exemption to provide relief to advocates from the discomfort of wearing black coats in high temperatures.
Dress Code Adjustments
While the requirement to wear black coats has been relaxed, advocates are still mandated to wear white shirts paired with white bands during court proceedings. This adjustment aims to balance professional decorum with practical comfort considerations during the hotter months.
Similar Practices in Other Jurisdictions
This move aligns with practices in other regions where dress codes are modified to accommodate climatic conditions. For instance, in Bangladesh, wearing a black coat is not mandatory during summer in courts other than the Supreme Court, high courts, district courts, sessions courts, or city civil courts.
Implications
The High Court's decision reflects a sensitivity to the advocates' working conditions, acknowledging the challenges posed by traditional attire during extreme weather. By temporarily adjusting the dress code, the court aims to ensure that advocates can perform their duties comfortably while maintaining the profession's decorum.
