A lieutenant of Ireland’s Kinahan organised crime group, Sean McGovern, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison after being extradited from Dubai, marking a major milestone in international efforts to dismantle one of Europe’s most powerful drug cartels.

A key figure in the Kinahan network, one of Europe’s largest drug trafficking organisations, McGovern was convicted of directing organised crime and attempted murder.

Ending a landmark case in Dublin, the Special Criminal Court described 40-year-old Sean McGovern as a “senior lieutenant” in the cartel.

McGovern, who appeared in court wearing a black cardigan and white-collared shirt, remained silent as he received his sentence.

He had pleaded guilty in March to two charges of directing the activities of a criminal organisation linked to gangland murder.

Prosecutors said he played a central coordinating role in the 2016 killing of Noel Kirwan, who was shot dead outside his home in Dublin, and in a 2017 plot targeting rival gang member James Gately.

Evidence presented included encrypted communications, surveillance material and the use of an Estonian hired gunman.

Judge Patrick McGrath described the Kirwan murder as “cruel and callous” and “meticulously planned”.

Detective Dave Gallagher said outside court: “Let the conviction and sentencing today be a lesson for those who glorify organised crime… There are no untouchables.”

The case stems from a violent feud between the Kinahan cartel and Dublin’s Hutch gang, triggered by a 2016 hotel shooting that escalated into multiple killings across Ireland and abroad.

Originally from Dublin, McGovern moved to the UAE in 2017 and was arrested in Dubai in 2024 after an Interpol red notice was issued. He became the first senior Kinahan associate extradited from the UAE to Ireland.

His sentencing marks the first major conviction of a senior figure in the Kinahan Organised Crime Group amid an intensified global crackdown on the cartel, which is also linked to firearms trafficking and people smuggling.

The victim’s son, Kristopher Kirwan, said the outcome “made history”, adding that international cooperation had finally brought his father’s killer to justice.

Last month, alleged cartel leader Daniel Kinahan was also arrested in Dubai, with Irish authorities continuing to seek his extradition on serious organised crime charges.
